Driver state detection is a system that monitors the driver’s physical and mental level while within a vehicle. The detection and monitoring of a driver’s state play an important and crucial role in automotive safety. More importantly, in an automated driving system where the driver needs to take over control, due to system limitations, the driver must take over and maneuver the vehicle. The driver state detection system can ensure that the system can relinquish control to the driver safely.

The driver state detection system will read numerous inputs simultaneously of the driver and decide whether the driver is ready and able to take over control or is too vulnerable to perform the task by himself. The result can show several are of interest such as stress level, fatigue, distraction, aggression, etc. The system can alarm the driver, if the result falls into a critical threshold, to be more vigilant.


Despite the comfort in a vehicle and the adaptation of autonomous driving, safety is still the most important feature. Increasing requirements for safety encourage manufacturers and suppliers to further develop innovative driver assistance systems. Moreover, the assessment of the driver’s state is an important component in automated driving. In an area where autonomous driving can’t be accessed, manual driving will be crucial. Physiological audio-visual markers will play an important part to develop a reliable and credible system that can recognize features of the driver’s different mental awareness states.
